President Vella saluted the memory of Maria Sciberras, noting how she made it her lifelong mission, “to educate, to convince, and to fight this scourge of drugs”, and how she stood shoulder to shoulder with victims, thus earning their trust and respect.
President George Vella gave the closing address at the Dr Maria Sciberras Memorial Lecture organised by the Foundation for Social Welfare Services, held at the University of Malta Valletta Campus.
Knowing her personally for many years as a student and later as a newly qualified doctor, the President said how Sciberras was a hands-on General Practitioner, “who loved her work and showed it”.
The President continued by giving a broad account of the development of efforts to tackle the increasing problem of drug abuse, including early efforts to set up the Interdepartmental Commission against Drug Abuse and Ilicit Trafficking (ICADAIT).
The President described Dr Sciberras as a formidable woman who utilised the bond that she built with patients to the full, and who radiated confidence to her patients.
