‘Mental Health services have to be integrated into community’ – MHA

The Mental Health Association has said it is pleased that an agreement has been found between the Government, Parliament and key entities over the inclusion of mental health services into the main health system.

The move comes as efforts are made to meet the Comprehensive Mental Health Action Plan 2013-2020. The MHA explains that Community based care is central to this and therefore needs to be ‘further developed and strengthened’ while also providing new services to patients and their carers.

In addition to medical care, the community services should be providing facilities like hostels and drop-in centres which give patients activities like painting, music, dance, among other social services.

MHA says that these measures actually work to help reduce the need to institutionalize services while ensuring the financial and human needs better service the community.
