A Gozo Channel employee was released from arrest after he was accused of stealing a handbag containing €1,500 from a ferry passenger.
The 26-year-old Xewkija resident was arraigned before Magistrate Bridget Sultana.
He was working on the ferry’s cafeteria on the 9th August 2019 when he found a handbag which was left behind by a passenger.
According to the prosecution, footage showed that the accused handled the handbag in question.
The accused said that he moved the handbag from the cafeteria to the ‘lost and found’ room. The Police said that the victim’s son had told them that the accused had told him that no handbag was found.
Defence lawyers Franco Debono and Amadeus Cachia entered a not guilty plea and asked for their client to be released from arrest.
Notwithstanding the prosecution’s objection to the plea, the Court ordered the conditional release of the accused against a deposit of €3,000 and a personal guarantee of €4,000. A curfew has also been imposed and the man also needs to sign the register at his local police station three times a week.
