Remanded in custody after car stolen “for fun”

A young man was remanded in custody, awaiting reports from the Probation Services, after admitting to having been involved in a car theft in Birkirkara.

The 21-year-old resident of Birkirkara, along with a 22-year-old resident from Żejtun, stole a car “for fun” and ended up in a car crash.

The Inspector is accusing the two youths of heightened attempted robbery since the stolen car was driven in public and they were found with unlicensed knives in public.

Furthermore, the man was accused of having caused damage to the car, for driving dangerously and without insurance and for driving after the car accident. He was also accused of committing such crimes while having a number of suspended sentences, and in breach of probation order.

The defence attorney requested the drawing up of a pre-sentencing report. Magistrate Donatella Frendo Dimech accepted this plea and asked to keep the accused in custody pending judgment.

The Żejtun resident had pleaded guilty last week and was handed a suspended sentence.
