Gozo Bishop Mario Grech handed the missionary mandate to Fr Mario Curmi on Saturday morning. Mario Curmi, who was ordained two years ago and belongs to the Xagħra Parish, would soon embark on a pastoral mission in Guatemala.
Bishop Grech said that Fr Curmi had expressed his wish of going on a pastoral mission earlier on at his ordination as a priest. Fr Curmi was subsequently prepared both academically and through pastoral experience in Spain for the task he would be undertaking.
Bishop Grech explained to those who still question why he accepted the young priest’s mission wish saying that it would be suicidal for the church to isolate itself. Furthermore, he explained that it was encouraged for people to leave their comfort zone and bring the teachings of the Gospel to far away places referring to Pope Francis’ words.
The Gozo Bishop maintained that Fr Curmi’s wish was endorsed by the Church in Gozo, describing the missionary mandate as a blessing for both the Church in Guatemala and the Church in Malta.
