Woman mugged, husband suffers heart attack; man remanded in custody

A 33-year-old unemployed man was charged with violent robbery.

The man who allegedly mugged an elderly couple on October 22, along Triq Diċembru 13 in Marsa, was in breach of his bail conditions.

The accused pleaded not guilty to the charges which also included stealing from a vending machine, relapsing and breaching bail conditions.

A request for bail was turned down and he was remanded in custody.

Police Inspector Fabian Fleri explained that the victim and her husband had been walking in Ħamrun, when her bracelet dropped. The accused followed the victim all the way to Blata l-Bajda, insisting that the bracelet was his.

The accused then pushed the woman and took her mobile. As a result of the violent mugging, the husband had a heart attack.

Police Inspectors Fabian Fleri, Robert Vella and Lydon Zammit led the prosecution.

Lawyer George Anton Buttigeg appeared for the accused.

Lawyer Daniel Buttigieg appeared as parte civile.
