A woman has been left fighting for her life after she was stabbed in the head during an argument in Ħaż-Żabbar.
At 8.15pm yesterday, the police received reports about a woman lying unconscious on the pavement in Main Street. She had been stabbed in the head with a knife.
The District Police were assisted by the Rapid Intervention Unit. It resulted that there had been an argument between the victim and a man in a football club in Main Street, which had escalated outside the shop. It was then that the man allegedly stabbed the woman and then fled the scene.
An ambulance was called to assist. The woman was given medical assistance, taken to Mater Dei and identified as being in critical condition.
Some time after the police started looking for the aggressor, he gave himself in at the Police Headquarters in Floriana. He walked in covered in blood and had some injuries in his hand. The RIU officials found an illegal substance on his person, suspected to be drugs. He was taken to hospital and then taken to the Police Headquarters under arrest for further investigation.
The victim is 34 years old and the aggressor is 33 years old. They are both from Ħal Safi.
Magistrate Ian Farrugia has opened an inquiry into the case.
