A 49-year-old woman was badly hurt on Saturday night in the wake of an apparent violent altercation in Buġibba.

The police reported that at around 10:45pm, their assistance was required in Triq it-Turisti, where they found the woman, a British national who resides in the area, lying on the ground.

The woman was taken to Mater Dei Hospital for treatment, and initial inquiries suggested that she had been involved in an argument with a 38-year-old man, a Syrian national who resides in Balzan.

The 38-year-old was held for questioning by the police, whose investigations are ongoing, while duty magistrate Doreen Clarke opened an inquiry.
