A rural plot of land on the road to Għar Lapsi may become a bungalow and garage if its owners have their way, a development application submitted to the Planning Authority shows.
PA/3458/20 would see the construction of “a basement garage and unit on one floor” on a field in Triq ix-Xagħra tal-Gżira, just next to the roundabout linking it to the roads leading to Għar Lapsi and Wied iż-Żurrieq. “Landscaping is also proposed,” according to the application.
The area is outside of the development zone, and while a few small rural rooms may be found in nearby fields, no built-up structures exist in the plot where the development is planned. The area does not appear to be cultivated at present, as a few piles of stone blocks have been left on site.
The application was presented last January, but will be formally published in newspapers on Wednesday. Any objections are to be made to the PA by 26 June.
Since the application is at an early stage, the PA is yet to recommend whether to approve or refuse the permit. However, as a general rule, plans to build new residences in an unbuilt plot of ODZ should not be favourably looked upon.
