A casual election is expected to be held in the coming days following the resignation of Finance Minister Prof. Edward Scicluna from Parliament in order to become Governor of the Central Bank of Malta.
Three candidates could replace Prof. Scicluna in Parliament; Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando, Gavin Gulia or Charles Azzopardi.
However, the Labour Party could choose to not hold a casual election but to co-opt someone as in the case of former MEP now MP Miriam Dalli who was co-opted to replace former Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
Prime Minister Robert Abela’s Chief of Staff was also co-opted by the Labour Party following the resignation of Fgura doctor Etienne Grech.
Last week government announced that Minister Scicluna will succeed Mario Vella, as Governor of the Central Bank of Malta, who is moving on to become the Special Commissioner for Economic, Financial and Trade Relations with the United Kingdom. This is due to the Brexit transitory period coming to an end on the 1st of January 2021.
The appointments will come into force on January 1st.
Prof. Scicluna was elected in Parliament in March 2013 and again in June 2017. Between 2009 and 2013 he served as a Member of the European Parliament.
