The Malta Union of Teachers (MUT) stated that it will not allow the Ministry for Education and employment (MEDE) to employ foreign teachers whilst putting its (MUT) proposals aside.
The MUT was reacting to an article published on The Malta Independent. In the said article, Minister Evarist Bartolo was quoted to have said that MEDE is discussing with the MUT on the possibility of engaging foreign teachers to make up for the shortages in the sector.
The union said that over the years it had provided MEDE with a number of tentative solutions for the limited supply of educators. They also said that none of the proposals involved the need to acquire teachers from abroad.
MUT had suggested amongst others, a revamp in the qualifying courses, regular salary increases, and incentives in the employment contract that also allows for the protection of those wishing to engage in a teaching career.
