A group of asylum seekers held a protest against their detention in Ħal Safi.

The protest began at around noon, with people holding posters and chanting “freedom”. On one of the posters there was written “Free us. 132 days”.

A police spokesperson said that members of the Civil Protection Department and Police units were dispatched on site.

This is not the first time that asylum seekers have protested their detention and asked for freedom.

On Monday a mini-summit was held in Malta, which saw five interior EU ministers meeting and agreeing on a position paper on disembarking and relocating migrants. No details were given about the proposal. The plan will be presented to the EU 24’s other interior ministers.

34 non-governmental organisations have already called on the government to release those who are held in detention, unless their detention is clearly and objectively justified.
