The WHO’s director general Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus said that he hopes that the coronavirus pandemic will be over in two years.
The Spanish flu pandemic of 1918 took two years to end, he said, adding that current advances in technology could enable the world to halt the virus “in a shorter time”.
The head of the World Health Organisation acknowledged that in a globalized world, the virus has a better chance of spreading and enables it to move fast among communities. He added that at the same time there was the knowledge and technology to stop it.
Ghebreyesus stressed on the importance of national unity and global solidarity.
The Spanish flu killed at least 50 million people while the coronavirus has so far killed almost 800,000 and infected 22.7 million more.
