Past mistakes are repeated today, President George Vella said in his key-note speech delivered during a commemorative forum on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

The forum was organised by the Insights Institute, Corporate ID Group’s newly set think thank, in collaboration with Ci Consulta’s Diplomatique.Expert geopolitical division, the GeoVistas Institute of the Fondation de Malte and the European Commission Representation in Malta on the occasion of the 30th anniversary of the Fall of the Berlin Wall.

He observed that there one could see a parallel reality to the Berlin Wall in the present. Instead of erecting a physical wall, mental and virtual walls are erected to separate people, ideas and knowledge, he remarked. Adding that the significance of the event, and the power of unity and dialogue is not understood in full, and instead humanity continues to perpetuate the mistakes of superiority, intolerance, ostracism, xenophobia and outright racism.

“In reality, none of us could ever entirely grasp and understand the sheer impact and importance of this historical event on the affected population,” Vella observed, adding that it was not only the fall of a physical concrete wall, but also the fall of the politics of division.

During his address, the President touched on Brexit and migration.

The founder of Insights Institute and Executive Chairman of the Corporate ID Group, Jesmond Saliba said that the events on the night of the 9 November 1989 symbolized hope for a better reality by being together. He remarked that the event taught him to ‘look’ at ways of bridging of bring people together.

The event was also addressed by the German Ambassador to Malta Walter Haßmann, Professor Joe Pirotta, Ci Consulta’s GeoPolitics advisor Matthew Bugeja and the Fondation De Malta Executive Director David Raphael Busuttil.
