Partit Laburista MEP and former party leader Alfred Sant said that while a sense of continuity is needed, ‘we cannot continue as though it is business as usual’.
Sant said that he expects the Prime Minister in waiting, Robert Abela, to set the tone for the government administration he will head after he is sworn in, in a Facebook post on Monday. The former Prime Minister highlighted good governance and environment as areas which need new guidance.
“One needs to keep the business community happy so that it can function, however, no part of the sector should be allowed to get the upper hand and get to do whatever it wants,” Sant said.
Backbencher and legal consultant to the government Robert Abela was elected following an unexpected leadership race after outgoing Prime Minister Joseph Muscat announced he will step down in December when murder suspect, Electrogas director and 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech was arraigned in court in relation to Daphne Caruana Galizia murder. Abela won against the Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne.
In a statement, Partit Nazzjonalista said that despite Partit Laburista elected a new leader, it was clear that nothing will change.
Abela in his first speech highlighted that there was no distinction between party supporters. He thanked Fearne for his candidature and hoped to continue working together for the good of the country. He ensured the supporters that he will keep Muscat’s project “alive”.
