The Commissioner for the Rights of Persons with Disability (CRPD) Oliver Scicluna said that he and the Commission are certain that when people employ workers with diverse abilities, success can be achieved.
During an interview with Newsbook.com.mt, Scicluna was questioned about the struggles people with a disability face every day at their place of work.
Scicluna said that recently, complaints about finding employment have increased, simply due to the fact that the number of people with disabilities increased. He added that it is necessary that communities continue to progress and better the careers of people with disabilities.
The Commissioner continued to explain that generally, employers are unaware of the needs of a person with a disability. He said that as always, everyone is different, including people with disabilities. Therefore, employers should not make the mistake of throwing everyone in the same basket. The Commission noted that most employers are not even aware that it is a legal obligation to offer reasonable accommodation to persons with disabilities.
On the other hand, Scicluna gladly informed Newsbook.com.mt that over half of the Commission’s workforce are people who have a disability; even though there it isn’t a legal requirement.
He concluded the interview by encouraging all those who are afraid of employing people with disabilities to take the step forward. Scicluna reminded that there are several entities which help guide employers in the best way possible, including the Lino Spiteri Foundation as well as Aġenzija Sapport.
