To mark the occasion of International Podiatry Day, the Association of Podiatrists of Malta (APM) has issued a video message to raise awareness on podiatry.
A podiatrist is a qualified health care professional who specialises in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment and rehabilitation of disorders of the foot and ankle. The podiatrist’s scope of practice is diverse. It includes paediatrics, diabetes, sports injuries, structural and biomechanical problems, geriatrics, vascular, rheumatology, wound management and podiatric surgery.
For a podiatrist to practise in Malta, he/she must attain state registration from the Council of Professions Complimentary to Medicine (CPCM). A podiatrist is state registered if he/she bears the following letters after his name S.R.Pod. No person may practice the field of or use the term podiatrist without state registration from the local professional authority.
Founded in 1999, the Association of Podiatrists of Malta is a non-profit, apolitical professional organisation that represents podiatrists practising the podiatry profession in Malta. It is a pre-eminent membership organisation for state registered podiatrists practising in Malta.
The APM would also like to point out that any short courses being promoted as educational courses for the treatment of foot problems which should be treated by a podiatrist are not endorsed by the APM and the University of Malta.
