Watch: “True happiness is not the same as pleasure” – Bishop Grech

Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

Gozo’s Bishop Mario Grech said that although society offers diverse forms of pleasure, true happiness is on a completely different spectrum. This was said on the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption of Mary and the closing of the Marian year.

Mgr. Grech explained that the business world is fully aware that there is a natural need that one enjoys his or her life, and therefore invests in ways and products which give us the impression that they will make us happy. He said that the world is being dominated by a mentality where happiness is allowed to be achieved despite all costs and consequences.

The Bishop stated that the fact that Malta has reached the point where it is considering legalising cannabis for recreational use is in fact worrying. In other words, we would be offering drugs to make people happy, added Mgr. Grech.

“I wish that the Church helps people find happiness”

The fact that most people are finding happiness in activities they do solely is reducing total overall happiness, explained Mgr. Grech. He added that he wishes that he sees the local Church act so that it helps people be content. He said that together with the Church’s work to be close to those who are suffering and going through rough times, this can be done by spreading the Gospel and helping people accepting the gift of faith.

Gozo’s Bishop insisted that if happiness is a result of having a relationship with someone who loves us, then Jesus should be the root of supernatural happiness, as he loves us unconditionally.

In the past months, Mgr. Grech said that there were several moments which triggered the Marian devotion. The Bishop said that Mary is a woman of joy because of her close relationship with Jesus. He stated that Mary fills us with joy, not only because she guides us towards Jesus, but also because they shared a perfect relationship with each other. She herself was full of joy and happiness.

Bishop Grech encouraged everyone to welcome Mary as the Marian year is coming to an end. As Mary helped Jesus fill the hearts of those attending Cana’s wedding with joy, Mary is still there to bring happiness to everyone today, resulting in less rage, negativity and destruction.
