Musicians Josef Camilleri (‘Xagħru’) and Luke Agius (‘Lulu’) make up local band Xarulù – an two-man project set up mainly to entertain people and churn out original recordings.
“People refer to us as a crazy duo,” Agius tells Newsbook.com.mt with a smile, “We are influenced by classic rock and other genres. In our live performances, every song is transformed in our way with improvisation of solos and melody. We love to entertain people and also engage with them during every gig.”
Over the past few years, the band has played during some of the largest events in Malta such as Rockestra, Malta Song for Europe, Beland Festival and the Għaxaq Music Festival. They won four awards in the Għanja tal Poplu contest and have also performed with the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra several times.
Last summer Xarulù had their biggest gig to date when they played for singer Marc Martel (who provided Freddie Mercury’s vocals, together with actor Rami Malek, for the Oscar-winning film ‘Bohemian Rhapsody’).
“That was massive because he is an international star!” enthuses Luke.
The two musicians also have different session work going on with other artistes on the island.
Xarulù will be playing at this year’s Għaxaq Music Festival, just before The Travellers, on the 8th August. They will also give people the chance to sing with them during a live karaoke session at The Summer Beer Garden on the 1st August.
