The Royal Ballet can be seen at its best in Swan Lake. And now you can watch a live performance of this masterpiece filled with iconic moments on screen at the Eden Cinemas on the 1st April.
Swan Lake – the first of three great ballets with a score by Tchaikovsky – is the tragic love story of Odette and Prince Siegfried. Siegfried falls for Odette when he comes across her whilst out hunting. He learns that she is under a spell cast by the evil Von Rothbart, which means that she can only take her human form at night-time and has to live as a swan by day. Siegfried vows to break the spell. But Von Rothbart disguises his daughter Odile as Odette and tricks Siegfried into breaking his vow of love. Can he still save Odette from the curse?
Liam Scarlett’s glorious production of Swan Lake, new in 2018, returns for its first revival. While remaining faithful to the original choreography of Marius Petipa/Lev Ivanov text, Scarlett’s additional choreography and John Macfarlane’s magnificent designs breathe new life into what is arguably the best-known and most-loved classical ballet.
Cinema audiences will be treated to a fantastic cast with Royal Ballet principal dancer Lauren Cuthbertson as Odette/Odile and first soloist William Bracewell as Prince Siegfried. Dance highlights include a sumptuous pas de deux for Odette and Siegfried, an the array of national dances in Act III, and the iconic corps de ballet of swans.
Tchaikovsky’s first score for ballet soars with its symphonic sweep and combines perfectly with exquisite choreography from the grand pas de deux of Prince Siegfried and Odile to the swans at the lakeside. An intoxicating mix of spectacle and intimate passion, the overall effect is irresistible.
Swan Lake will be shown live at the Eden Cinemas in St Julians on Wednesday 1st April 2020 at 8.15 pm. with an encore on Sunday 5th April at 4.00 pm.
