Watch: The best is yet to come – Freddie Portelli hits to become a musical

In 2019, Freddie Portelli becomes a musical. Yes, you read that right.

Portelli needs no introduction. Practically a national institution to many a generation, he is the man who made Maltese rock n’ roll sound awesome… something unheard of at one time. Freddie was always a bolt of energy on stage; many of his stage tricks, phrases and music have become the stuff of legend.

Freddie Portelli is arguably Malta’s highest-grossing singer and has had one of the longest musical careers in Malta’s history, belting out hit after hit and amassing an impressive discography.

After the success of theatrical productions Balzunetta Towers and Ħanina Maddalena, Dominic Galea and Sean Buhagiar are teaming up again to make sure this original musical in Maltese called Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej becomes a staple event in the local cultural calendar.

The musical is written by local heavyweight Malcolm Galea, while Sean Buhagiar will be back on the director’s seat. The musical arrangements and live band will be under the direction of Mro Dominic Galea.

“The deal was sealed over whiskey and chocolate cake”

“Growing up in the nineties, Freddie was already a local cult figure and I really believe we can elevate his music and still give it contemporary relevance. One phone call to Freddie, and that was all it took. He was sold from the word go. The deal was sealed over whiskey and chocolate cake,” said Buhagiar.

“Freddie was the first to know. He is phoning us twice a day, attending recordings, sending feedback, writing notes and wants to see this happen more than anyone. At my age, I hope I can handle this excitement,” laughed Dominic Galea, who is collaborating with Portelli on new arrangements.

Many of Freddie Portelli’s songs are part of the country’s collective memory; Mur Ħallini being arguably the best-known Maltese rock ‘n roll song ever written. The musical will feature many other hits such as Viva Malta, Xewqat Sbieħ, Se Jkolli Nemmen and Għal Dejjem, as well as lesser-known songs such as Bħalek Hawn Kemm Trid, Ma Taħraqni B’xejn and Dak ir-Rock n’ Roll.

The music of his new single, Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej was written by Dominic Galea with lyrics by Sean Buhagiar.

The radio waves are ready… the King is back.

Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej – the Musical will take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre in August 2019, premiering on the 9th August and running for two weekends. It is being supported by Kinnie and APS Bank.
