President Emeritus Marie-Louise Coleiro Preca has said that this was a terrible time, referring to the murder of Lassana Souleymane Cisse on April 6th.
Coleiro Preca was speaking at an event held at Hal Far where local NGOs and dozens of people gathered to commemorate the memory of Mr Souleymane Cisse.
Reverend Kim Hurst said that today people had gathered to ensure that there is peace in Malta. Another speaker said that a presence had been lost with the murder of Lassane. He said that people should not allow people who are griefing to be alone to be filled with fear.
The former President said that Malta has lost one of her brothers. Recalling the words of Martin Luther King Jr. she said that one cannot fight the darkness and the darkness and hate with hatred. She stressed that people should show their love even in such terrible times. She added that everyone had lost with the killing of Lassane – not only his family.
A spokesman for the Community of Ivorian immigrants in Malta thanked all those who were for the activity. He described Souleymane as a friend and a brother. He called on people not to forget him.
Lassane was murdered in a hit and run shooting in Hal Far on April 6th. Two Ghanian men were also shot in the attack but survived.
The 67 local NGOs and International Organisations who endorsed the event, called on the Maltese police force to use all necessary resources to bring to justice those who committed the crime.
They said that Lassane’s life was important and that he meant a lot to his family and friends.
They stressed that such acts of violence could not be ignored or brushed under the carpet.
On 6th April, Lassana was shot and murdered in Hal-Far by unknown assailants. Two other people were seriously injured. So far everything indicates that this was a racist attack. Today we remember Lassana, call for a serious investigation of this case and condemn hatred in all its forms.
