Today President George Vella took the oath of office at the Presidential Palace in Valletta.
Here are some of the special moments of this day.
Dr George Vella becomes the tenth President of Malta.
Dr Vella was born on 24 April 1942 and first studying at Zejtun Primary school, and later receiving his secondary education at De La Salle College in Vittoriosa.
Between 1957 and 1964, he studied medicine at the University of Malta before graduating as a Doctor in Medicine and Surgery in 1964.
Dr Vella worked as a family doctor in his hometown of Zejtun before being elected as Labour MP in 1976.
He served in a number of ministerial roles as Foreign and Environment Minister before becoming Deputy Prime Minister in the Alfred Sant administration between 1996-1998. He also served in the House of Representatives until 2017.
In order to take up the role President, Dr Vella and his wife Miriam both had to give up their membership of the Labour Party.
