Freshly inaugurated Sliema district clinic will be offering mental health services. The Sliema district clinic was inaugurated on Monday morning by Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne and Sliema mayor Anthony Chircop.
Minister Fearne explained that mental health is a topic which is at heart, and that Sliema’s district clinic is among five clinics from where such services will be available. He added that the idea is to provide services in the community. The health minister emphasized on the importance of having an integrated health services and providing mental health care within the community.
Minister Fearne added that by having mental health services in the community, patients will be taken out of hospital and treated within the community. Such setting will help fighting the stigma which is associated with mental health issues.
Mental health services are available at Attard, Pietà, Żurrieq, Sliema and will soon be made available at Birgu District Clinic.
A GP, nurse and speech language pathologist will be seeing and treating patients at the Sliema District Clinic. A mental health clinic will also be available at the district clinic while occupational mental health therapy will be available in the afternoon.
Fearne thanked Sliema mayor Anthony Chircop, saying that while the Ministry which he heads will provide the services, the local council will be responsible for its upkeep.
