Parliamentary Secretary for Active Ageing and Persons with Disability Silvio Parnis has endorsed the ‘Adopt a Grandparent’ initiative by Missio and Newsbook.com.mt.
This service, which so far has reached over 100 volunteers, seeks to overcome the well of loneliness in which several elderly persons find themselves in when their families fail to visit or keep in contact. Missio and Newsbook.com.mt have partnered up to pair up people who have no one to visit them with those who would be willing to keep them company.
“In these times of COVID-19, the need was felt to help those who find themselves in the depth of loneliness,” Parnis said, “I congratulate the people behind this initiate and urge the elderly to make use of this service… this is a great initiative which thinks of those elderly people who have no-one to take care of them”
The initiative has also been endorsed by Auxiliary Bishop Joseph Galea Curmi and by the Minister for the Family and Social Solidarity Michael Falzon, as well as by the Richmond Foundation.
