Candidate for Partit Laburista (PL) Leader Robert Abela said that he does not believe that the former Chief of Staff of the Prime Minister, Keith Schembri, has lost his phone. This was stated while he was being questioned during the television programme ‘Xarabank’.
Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne, who is the second candidate in the internal election of the Labour Party, was also present during the programme. Whoever wins this election is automatically appointed Prime Minister. Fearne said he is not sure what Schembri has done, and added that this problem should be solved by the Police, and not him as Prime Minister.
The former Chief of Staff’s mobile phone was mentioned in Court during the gather of evidence against murder suspect Yorgen Feech, charged with complicity in the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Schembri later resigned from his post.
When leading investigator Keith Arnaud was asked under oath why was Schembri’s mobile not found and seized, he replied that they gathered all devices including his children’s laptops. However, regarding Scehmbri’s mobile, he had told the police that he had lost it.
Questioned whether their trust and confidence in the Police Force has decreased, Abela responded by saying that the police should use all possible means to seek the phone, and added that if he is Prime Minister, he will ensure that the police are given the necessary resources to perform their duties.
While being interviewed by Newsbook.com.mt a few days ago, Robert Abela said that he has criticized Government every time he felt the need to, and his silence was not and never will be bought by anyone.
Fearne said the phone was not lost by the Police, but was extinguished by Keith Schembri. Therefore, he reiterated that it is the Police that needs to find solutions.
During an interview with Newsbook.com.mt, Chris Fearne described himself as a person who takes no nonsense and who does not beat around the bush.
