Rule of law NGO, Repubblika, launched an educational campaign entitled “Active & Responsible Citizenship” with the aim of promoting active and responsible citizenship as well as encouraging a culture of democratic rights, respect for human rights and the upholding of the rule of law.
In a statement, the NGO said that the campaign is based on its declaration of values and principles which may be found on its website.
While we expect a clean government free from corruption allegations, democracy needs the active participation of informed citizens, the NGO said, highlighting the role of education in the long-term.
The first initiative will be an annual competition which will culminate in an evening of events dedicated to democracy. Students in compulsory education (from Year 7/Form 1) up to post-secondary education are encouraged to participate in essay and poster competition. Students who are divided into three categories based on their age, are being asked to submit an essay or a poster inspired by the Universal Declaration of Human Rights.
The campaign will also include a radio and social media campaign relating to the protection of journalists, democracy, the separation of powers and human rights.
Threats to the democracy will also be highlighted throughout the campaign.
The NGO intends on publishing books for children.
Throughout the campaign, the NGO will collaborate with local councils and other NGOs which share its goals and principles.
