Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej has made history when it comes to original Maltese musicals, claiming the highest grossing box office opening in Maltese history.
Opening with eight sell-out nights at the MCC on its debut run, the hit show broke all-time box office records for the musical theatre genre.
In fact, over 10,000 ticket holders will have watched the show on its first run, which premiered on Friday 9th August to a standing ovation by an elated crowd. On Thursday – another sold out show on Santa Maria – after the show, the cast also sang Xewqat Sbieħ (Happy Birthday) to Freddie Portelli’s wife, who celebrated her birthday on the day.
Produced by Balzunetta Productions, Il-Kbir Għadu Ġej is a musical based on the hits of the legendary Freddie Portelli. It was penned by comedian Malcolm Galea and features a live band by Mro Dominic Galea who also worked on the arrangements. It has brought together the theatre-going public, Freddie Portelli fans and those who were just up for a highly entertaining night out.
The producer and director of the show, Sean Buhagiar, said that the team knew they had a great product, but the audience reactions still exceeded their expectations: “We want to continue challenging notions of what is possible at the theatre both in terms of local storytelling when it comes to musical theatre, and at the box office. Theatre goers were stuck to their seats for three hours. That’s already rare, let alone people not wanting to leave the theatre after. All we have to say is thank you!”
