An audit of the concession through which three public hospitals were transferred to the company Vitals Global Healthcare will be ready soon, Partit Laburista leadership hopeful Chris Fearne said.
VGH was awarded the controversial €2 billion concession to run Karen Grech, St Luke’s and Gozo hospitals for 30 years in March 2016.
The Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister was interviewed on Newsbook.com.mt.
During the interview, Fearne said that he had requested the National Audit Office (NAO) to investigate the concession. Partit Nazzjonalista through its members on the Public Accounts Committee had moved a formal request to the Auditor General to investigate the deal and clarify how it was done. Fearne explained that once the ongoing procedures were finalised, the investigation would be concluded.
Fearne who was a parliamentary secretary within a ministry headed by Konrad Mizzi was asked whether he was ‘comfortable’ with awarding a concession deal to a company whose owners are not known, replied with it would have been better had the investigation been concluded earlier. He added that he did not foresee that the it would take some three years. ‘If elected Prime Minister, I would strengthen the National Audit Office,’ Fearne replied.
