People from Nadur have kept Sicily in their thoughts after Mount Etna’s recent eruption caused numerous earth quakes. Nadur Mayor Edward Said indicated that Nadur is ready to take in victims, saying that since Malta is only 20 minutes away, “we need to be ready to help our kin.”
In comments to Newsbook.com.mt, the Mayor said that he is in contact with the Mayor of Zafferana Alfio Russo. During their correspondence, it was said that more earth quakes are being expected because the zone still is not stable. He explained that, due to Nadur’s twinning with Zaffarena, they felt the need to offer their help, saying that Nadur will do their best to help financially, and even in terms of hospitality if needs be.
With a population of almost 10,000 people, Zafferana Etnea, a town in the Province of Catania, was hit by an earth quake that was classified as a 4.8 on the Richter Scale.
It was said that during the night, the earth quake demolished a number of houses, leading to a number of people not being able to go back to their homes. Said explained that the Zafferana Local Council is currently working with the Civil Protection Department to find alternative accommodation for the victims.
