Partit Laburista leader Joseph Muscat arrived first in Naxxar where he kicked off his farewell tour on Sunday morning. Present among the crowd of Labour supporters are leadership candidates Chris Fearne and Robert Abela. He then went to Ħaż-Żebbuġ.
Muscat announced that he will step down from Prime Minister and Partit Laburista leader when 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech was arraigned in court. Fenech faces charges of funding and being complicit to the murder of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia. Both Fenech and middleman Melvin Theuma have implicated Muscat’s former chief of staff Keith Schembri.
Speaking to Labourites in Naxxar, Joseph Muscat said that he believes that he has done what is best for the country. ‘I’ve shouldered responsibility, maybe more than I had to’ Muscat claimed, adding that he did this with serenity. Muscat was accompanied by his wife Michelle Muscat. Speaking about the ‘movement’, Muscat said that it did not begin with him and would not end with his resignation, as he wished well to the both contenders for Partit Laburista’s leader.
‘I’m sure we will keep securing the majority of the votes,’ Muscat claimed. Both Fearne and Abela have the qualities to keep the party united according to Muscat. He promised his loyalty to the new leader.

Arriving in Ħaż-Żebbuġ around 10.45am on Sunday, Muscat told the gathered Labourites that the reforms will continue. ‘There will be change in the captain, and I shall be a sailor,’ Muscat said, adding that he would do anything which is needed out of him. Muscat stressed on the need for unity within the party.
