Apart from urgent landscaping works shown above, Infrastructure Malta issued a direct order of €108,169.88 for urgent embellishment works in Triq Buqana.

Newsbook.com.mt asked Infrastructure Malta CEO Fredrick Azzopardi what “urgent landscaping works” meant in connection to the direct orders published.

The CEO explained that the tender was exhausted and they the entity planted more trees than it was initially predicted. He remarked that currently there was another tender in the process of being awarded, for 17,000 more trees to be planted.

Azzopardi said that the entity could either stop its work or use the same rates as the tender to plant more trees. He described the rates as being competitive. Asked to clarify whether “urgent landscaping” meant “tree planting”, Azzopardi replied in the affirmative.

On the subject of direct orders, Azzopardi said that there are several reasons why the entity chooses to issue direct orders. He explained that damages caused by the storm were repaired through direct orders citing landing sites as an example. Azzopardi said that one was faced with a choice, or leave it as it is meaning someone could get hurt or repair it.

He added that Infrastructure Malta has competitive pre-established rates within a framework when it comes to the issuing of a direct order.

Other direct orders issued by Infrastructure Malta include “urgent directional signs” in various localities which amounted to €73,897 during the last six months of 2019.
