The seasonal influenza vaccine is to be administered for free from a number of health centres in Malta and Gozo.
The vaccine will be available as of 11th October onwards. The Minister for Health Chris Fearne urged people to take the vaccine in order to stave off further illness during a pandemic.
Since the symptoms of influenza are similar to those of COVID-19, testing hubs may end up being overwhelmed, and medical resources that can be dedicated to COVID-19 may end up being taken up to deal with influenza cases.
200,000 influenza vaccines have been procured, with a further 15,000 on the way.
When the COVID-19 vaccine becomes available, Malta has been allocated 330,000 doses through an agreement reached by the European Commission with pharmaceutical company AstraZeneca.
