The President of the European Commission Jean Claude Juncker said that in the coming days he will be following closely the events happening in Malta in relation to the assassination of investigative journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia and the corruption she unveiled.

He was answering a question asked during the last mid-day press briefing in Brussels. One of the journalists present asked him to comment on the state of events in Malta, especially when it comes to the respect towards the rule of law. Juncker said that it is not up to him to comment on the current state of Malta because he doesn’t have all the facts at hand.

With regards to the respect for the rule of law in the European Union in general, he said that he is “highly concerned”. He said that in more than one country, the rule of law is not respected enough.
