“I used to be superstitious…if it was a home game, I’d always put my left boot on first, and if it was an away, vice versa…but I scrapped it”, said Manchester United player Philip Jones.
Newsbook.com.mt interviewed two Manchester United players Phil Jones and Andreas Pereira on their superstitions and rituals before a big game, as well as their favourite memories at Old Trafford, the football club’s stadium.
On his end, Pereira said that the only thing he does before a game is listening to Brazilian music, as an ode to his cultural heritage.
When asked to recall their favourite memories at Old Trafford, both mentioned the game against Aston Villa, where Wayne Rooney passed the ball to Robin Van Persie, who scored the goal that ensured their win in the 2013 premier league. Jones also recalled the game where Manchester United beat Arsenal 8-2 at Old Trafford, in what he described as a ‘crazy crazy game that will never be repeated again’.
This interview was a result of the Minister for Tourism Konrad Mizzi’s announcement that Malta is Manchester United’s official global destination partner. He cited benefits for Malta’s exposure via events in other countries involving the players, as well as via the use of the English football club’s social media and television channels.
During the same press conference, football legend Bryan Robson spoke about his love for the island, saying that his first good and cheap holidays were spent in Malta at his father-in-law’s apartment.
