Partit Laburista leadership hopeful Robert Abela said that he has never protected disgraced OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri.
Speaking to the media after a press conference, Abela said that he could only speak for himself.
When asked if he feels that Daphne Caruana Galizia was a state-sanctioned murder, Abela said that the state did all it could to investigate the crime. He remarked that four people have been arraigned in relation to the assassination. He then proceeded to mention the investigations into the murders of Karen Grech and Raymond Caruana which have never been solved.
‘In a short time we got to know more of the story in the case of Caruana Galizia’s assassination,’ Abela said.
When asked if the Caruana Galizia family and the country are owed an apology in view of the current political crisis, Abela said that Caruana Galizia’s assassination ‘is an episode that hurts him a lot’.
‘I’ve deplored Caruana Galizia’s assassination. There’s no doubt that she was doing her job and this is not acceptable in our society,’ he said.
The PL leader hopeful said that while he understood the positions taken by her family he was not always in agreement with what they had to say. Abela added that despite what happened there should have not been an “attack on the country”.
When pressed about the apology, Abela said that if the ‘apology’ meant that the state had failed to protect Caruana Galizia’s life, then he did not believe that that was the case.
