Partit Laburista leadership hopeful Robert Abela asserted that he does not believe in the concept of free housing, putting forward a model where government would buy existing properties from owners through the issuing of bonds and which will be then rented out to those waiting for social accommodation. Abela explained that free social housing should be available only in exceptional cases.
Abela explained that such a model which was already in use in other countries, would balance land use and the natural environment, as existing buildings are refurbished and made used of. Addressing the press on Friday, Abela affirmed that he believed that everyone should have a roof over the heads. He explained that over the past years, not everyone could afford housing. He also acknowledged that with the economic growth, rents increased in such a way that 60-70% of the wages were going into paying rent.
Explaining the social accommodation model, Abela said that one should strike for a balance between the use of ODZ land and social housing. Abela added that once the country was stabilized such an investment would kick start the economy. He remarked that using such a model would save one the time since it would require a tendering and planning process.
