Health Minister Chris Fearne said that the number of graves at Mellieħa Cemetery is set to double to 160. In a press conference Fearne said that the graves at the cemetery known as “Omm il-Ħniena” will have 8 graves for public use while 68 graves will be on sale. The Planning Authority has already approved the development permit required in 2017. According to Fearne some people have registered interest in a grave for some 15 years.
He explained that the tender was signed last year with the works expected to cost around €400,000. Excavation works are set to start during the first quarter of 2019 followed by the building of the graves. The government is set to recover its money once the graves are sold.
Currently the demand for graves is around 2000 according to Fearne.
