Gozitan singer Ruth Portelli, who recently made a successful return to the local music scene after some time away, will soon be travelling to Varna, the so-called summer capital of Bulgaria.
There, she will be representing Malta in the Discovery International Pop Music Festival with two songs: Determinata, an original song penned by Emil Calleja Bayliss with music by Mark Scicluna and Think of Me, a cover version taken from the 2004 soundtrack of the movie musical The Phantom of the Opera.
Participation for Malta at the Discovery International Pop Music Festival has been a regularity with several artists such as Marvic Lewis, Mark Tonna, Olivia Lewis, Julie Zahra Ludwig Galea, Roger Tirazona, Eleanor Spiteri, Janvil, Domenique, Deborah C and Janice Mangion all featuring and leaving a lasting impact – some even leaving with a trophy.
Since its’ inception back in 1992, the Discovery International Pop Music Festival has featured up and coming stars from all over Europe including former Junior Eurovision Song Contest representatives Alina Eremia and Marios Tofi, Romanian iconic popstar, Laura Stoica and former Eurovision Song Contest representatives, Luminita Anghel, Nico, Aleksandra & Konstantin and Mihai Traistariu amongst others.
Having taken part in L-Għanja tal-Poplu – Festival tal-Kanzunetta Maltija, the Konkors Kanzunetta Indipendenza, and a local production of Joseph & the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat in the last 12 months, Ruth feels more than prepared to take on this experience, her first in an international music competition saying that, “she’s really excited, but extremely happy to have the chance to follow in the footsteps of someone like Janice Mangion… sharing the Maltese language with the Bulgarian audience”.
This years’ festival will be taking place between the 17th and 19th May. Ruth will be accompanied in Varna by her immediate family as well as her manager and publicist Marc Calleja Bayliss of Ironic PR & Artist Management.
