During the Emmy awards on Monday, director Glenn Weiss proposed to his girlfriend, Jan Svendsen on live television, straight after winning the Emmy for outstanding directing for a variety special.
He started off by paying tribute to his mother who had passed away two weeks prior, saying that part of my heart was broken, and he did not think it would ever be repaired and reminiscing that she always told him to “hold onto sunshine”.
And then he spoke directly to Ms Svendsen, who was sitting in the audience:
“Jan, you are the sunshine in my life, and mum was right, ‘Don’t ever let go of my sunshine’. You know why I don’t like to call you my girlfriend? Because I want to call you my wife.”
His ultra-romantic gesture – which apparently the Emmy producers were unaware of – elicited gasps, tears and laughter from the star-studded audience… especially when he produced the ring that his father had given to his mother’s when he proposed (he jokingly assured his siblings that he had permission from his father to give Ms Svendsen the ring).
And, if you were wondering if there is a happy ending to this story – she said yes!
