Watch: “During opening night, audience members were hurling objects at the stage”

In this week’s Take a Bow, Jean Noël Attard of the Malta Philharmonic Orchestra talks to about a concert due to take place at the Mediterranean Conference Centre under the direction of the MPO Principal Conductor Sergey Smbatyan and featuring pianist Alexei Volodin on Saturday 14th September at 8.00 pm.

Commissioned by Russian ballet impresario Sergei Diaghilev and first performed in Paris in 1913, Russian composer Igor Stravinsky’s The Rite of Spring features a pagan ritual where a virgin dances herself to death.

No wonder that it caused a scandal, with riots breaking out in the theatre; a reaction to Stravinsky’s jarring rhythms and complex innovations, Nijinsky’s exotic choreography and Roerich’s bizarre settings.

The programme also presents fellow Russian Rachmaninoff’s Piano Concerto No. 2 – often described as the greatest piano concerto ever written.
