Face masks should be worn in public, Public Health Consultant, Dr Tanya Melillo, said during an interview on Newsbook.com.mt on Sunday.
Dr Melillo appealed to the general public to make use of face masks when leaving their house. She also urged the public to avoid gathering in large numbers and to maintain social distancing.
On Sunday, 63 new coronavirus cases were reported in the daily bulletin. The new numbers exclude the number of asylum seekers who were rescued at sea after the government requested the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) to omit them from the tally.
The public health consultant reminded the public that the health authorities have recommended that people should not meet in groups bigger than ten in a bid to curb the local spread of coronavirus. Dr Melillo explained that such an approach should be adopted when eating out and when enjoying a day at the beach.
On practicing social distancing, Dr Melillo stressed that one should maintain a two-metre distance from another everywhere, including at the hairdresser or while queuing up.
On Sunday morning, CSN called for the mandatory wearing of face masks in public spaces. The NGO cited recommendations by the World Health Organization saying that masks are effective barriers to disease transmission.
