Tista' taqra bil- Malti.

Deputy Prime Minister and Health Minister Chris Fearne said that fellow Deputy Partit Laburista leader Chris Cardona is not above the law.

Former Economy Minister Cardona was not appointed as minister when Robert Abela became Prime Minister. He subsequently resigned from Parliament in April.

Both civil society groups and the Opposition have called for Cardona’s resignation and have also urged Abela to fire him from the post after Cardona’s name cropped up several times in court proceedings in relation to the assassination of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia.

During a press conference launching a new vaccine, Fearne was questioned on Cardona being kept on as deputy leader. The Deputy Prime Minister replied that no on was above the law, however, like any other citizen, Cardona has a right to a fair process before the court.

Fearne added that once that happens, he had no doubt that the necessary measures would be taken and that responsibility would be shouldered.

During the criminal proceedings against murder suspect Yorgen Fenech, who stands being accused of being an accomplice in the murder, a witness testified under oath that Melvin Theuma had told him, that he [Theuma] had been ordered to murder Caruana Galizia by former OPM Chief of Staff Keith Schembri and Fenech. Furthermore, Cremona testified that Theuma would always tell him the same story and the same details, and would mention Fenech, Schembri, Cardona and David Gatt.

This was not the first time that Cardona was mentioned in court during the criminal proceedings against the four individuals facing criminal charges in relation to the murder.

During Monday’s sitting, Cremona, Fenech’s business partner, told the court that he had received a photo of a certain “il-Biglee” over Signal. He explained that he did not know who he was but Fenech had told him [Cremona] that il-Biglee was the middleman between Cardona and Alfred Degiorgio (il-Fulu).

Prior to Fenech’s arraignment, Cardona was hauled in the Police Headquarters for questioning in November 2019. The former Economy Minister has denied claims that he was connected to the murder.

In previous court sittings, it had also emerged that Cardona’s number was the only number found on a burner phone retrieved from the seabed near the Marsa potato shed. Cardona’s name also came up in a letter Keith Schembri had allegedly sent to Yorgen Fenech through their mutual doctor, Adrian Vella, with instructions to pin the assassination on Cardona. The then minister had claimed that it was a frame-up.

In a recent interview, Cardona claimed that there was no evidence of any wrongdoing by himself and that there were only allegations against him.

Among those who have demanded Cardona’s resignation are Partit Nazzjonalista, Alternattiva Demokratika – The Green Party, Repubblika and Civil Society Network. Repubblika accused Prime Minister Robert Abela and Deputy Prime Minister Chris Fearne of protecting Cardona.

Newsbook.com.mt had revealed that Cardona was taken in for questioning in relation to the assassination of the investigative journalist and stories she had broken about him including his alleged visit to a German brothel while on Government business.
