Port security official, Patrick Pollacco said that they are still coming across children operating boats at sea.
Patrick Pollacco is in charge of port security and manages the maritime enforcement sector. He said that one should not compare their work at sea to that of traffic police on land.
Pollacco told Newsbook.com.mt that the officials are always on the lookout for careless boat operations. He explained that one cannot exceed 10 knots (around 20 km per hour) if one is less than 200 meters away from shore. He said that this is the most commonly breached law.
The port security official emphasized that no minors should be allowed to navigate any vessel. Pollacco furthered by saying that operation under the influence of alcohol is also commonly encountered.
Pollacco said that the presence of Transport Malta at sea has increased considerably. The officials can fine whoever breaches the law.
