PN MEP David Casa has called on the European Commission to set up a permanent fund to support journalism in European Union states.
During his speech in parliament, Casa highlighted that the media sector has been hit hard by the coronavirus crisis. The global pandemic has not only caused a worldwide public health emergency but has sparked a social and economic crisis.
He voiced his concern about the long lasting consequences of the economic crisis on the press, highlighting that this would in turn negatively impact democracy.
“Journalists have continued their work at great risk. But their media houses are under financial pressure, as income from advertising has plummeted,” the MEP noted.
A cross-party alliance has called on the European Commission to set up a permanent fund to support journalism. Other measures to address the new reality have also been put forward.
“The media has a crucial democratic role. The weakening of the media in member states must be prevented.”
