Anti-corruption activists gathered outside the Office of the Prime Minister on Wednesday afternoon. The spontaneous protest was called following the news that Dubai-based company 17 Black owner Yorgen Fenech was arrested earlier this morning.
Journalist and blogger Manuel Delia described Daphne Caruana Galizia assassination as the biggest injustice, adding that ‘she was killed so they could escape prison’. Delia continued by saying that injustice was done to Caruana Galizia herself, her family and the citizens who have the right to know.
A yacht belonging to Fenech was intercepted by the Armed Forces of Malta earlier this morning, after it had left Portomaso at around 5.30am. He was arrested during the early hours of Wednesday morning. Rule of law NGO Repubblika and pressure group Occupy Justice asked people to gather in a spontaneous gathering outside Castille at 6pm. Earlier the Opposition walked out of Parliament.
Delia said that it a judicial process would determine if someone is guilty or otherwise. However, he explained, Prime Minister Joseph Muscat is politically responsible of Caruana Galizia’s assassination. Adding that he should have fired his chief of staff Keith Schembri and Tourism Minister Konrad Mizzi back when journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia broke the story.
‘Now that he has lost control, now he has become a policeman,’ Delia stated, referring to Prime Minister Joseph Muscat.
During his address outside the Office of the Prime Minister, Delia said that ‘they’ve known for months the names which Muscat has mentioned.’ He pointed out what he termed as contradictions in Muscat’s claims, as he explained that Muscat claimed ‘our institutions function’ however in the same breath he said ‘I’ve given them resources’. Delia asked whether Muscat is in control, asking what he meant by giving them resources. ‘If they come to arrest your assistant, will they have to ask you for resources?’ Delia questioned.
