Bernard Grech has attended his first Partit Nazzjonalista executive committee meeting on Monday after he was elected as party leader.
During the said meeting, the executive committee unanimously approved a motion which would allow Grech to replace MP Ivan J. Bartolo who resigned from Parliament earlier during the day.
Bartolo was elected to Parliament in March to replace Marthese Portelli. His replacement will be by co-option after he was elected via a casual election.
This has set off in motion the process by which Grech will be sworn in as Opposition Leader.
Grech will be sworn in as MP on Tuesday and will be then sworn in as Opposition Leader.
In a statement on Monday following the executive committee meeting, Partit Nazzjonalista thanked Adrian Delia who served as its leader and Opposition leader for the past three years.
The party also thanked Ivan J. Bartolo for making way for the new PN leader, as well as the candidates commission and the electoral commission for their work over the past few weeks.
Delia hands keys to Grech
Earlier on Monday, Adrian Delia handed in the keys to leader’s office at the party’s headquarters to his successor.
Newly elected leader, Bernard Grech, thanked Delia for his contribution as PN leader and Opposition leader.
Following the symbolic ceremony, Grech and Delia discussed the party’s way forward and Delia’s future role within the party as well as in the shadow cabinet.
