Two barn owls have been stolen from a breeding project run by the Federation for Hunting and Conservation (FKNK) on Monday night, with the incident captured on CCTV.
The incident took place at the Razzett tal-Bagħal, a historic farmhouse in Buskett which is administered by the FKNK and which hosts a project seeking to reintroduce the barn owl as a breeding species in Malta.
The theft was discovered during feeding time on Tuesday morning, and the federation observed that it took place just days after it launched the third and most important phase of its breeding project.
CCTV footage shared publicly by the federation shows a man breaking into the site, grabbing hold of a barn owl and plucking a number of its wing feathers before making off. The man used a t-shirt to cover his face.
The incident was reported at the Rabat police station, and its CCTV footage was provided to the police to assist in their investigations.
The federation also launched a public appeal for information related to the case.
