A number of activists with flowers and candles gathered in front of the makeshift memorial in Valletta yesterday during a vigil to commemorate the death of journalist Daphne Caruana Galizia while demanding justice.
Daphne Caruana Galizia was assassinated in a car bomb outside her home in Bidnija, just over a year ago.
Activists from Occupy Justice and others organised a vigil with speeches and short videos in front of the Court building, by the monument of the Great Siege on the 16th of every month. Manuel Delia, along with the activists removed part of the net which was placed a few days ago to close off the monument section. The rest of the net was covered in graffiti with spray paint messages which said ‘Daphne was right’ and that the ‘truth is out’.
Lizzie Eldridge, a spokesperson and activist from Occupy Justice spoke with harsh words in confrontation with Minister for Justice Owen Bonnici who, in her words is regularly suffocating her activist friends’ freedom of expression. She asked him about what he was afraid of and the reason for obstructing their right to protest. She spoke about the latest developments regarding the 17 Black company and according to her, every road is leading to the Prime Minister’s office of Castille.
Two relatives of Daphne read out a list of honours and awards which Daphne received after her death, related to her work as an investigative journalist.
