Watch: 2 groups of asylum seekers leave for a better life in France and Portugal

Two groups of asylum seekers were relocated to Portugal and France, the government said in a statement.

The group who left for Portugal consists of asylum seekers that were rescued by the charity ship Alan Kurdi and a separate AFM rescue on July 7.

The group that left to France were rescued by the charity ship Ocean Viking and brought to Malta by the Armed Forces of Malta following a two-week standoff on August 23.

The government said that the individuals were assisted by the local authorities, the International Organisation for Migration (IOM), and officials from the respective embassies of Portugal and France in Malta.

These relocation processes are the result of an ad hoc agreement struck between the European Commission, Malta, and other EU members states.
